  • I asked my wife about washing fruits and vegetables.  She washes fruits and vegetables with water thoroughly.  Sometimes for melons she may put a drop of dish soap and scrub it real good and rinse well.  If she gets something she is especially concerned with she might put a skirt of Lysol but again, rinses thoroughly.  Mainly though with melons. She just wants to be sure when she puts the knife through the fruits and vegetables that all the dirt is off them to avoid dirt contamination.  No need to blanch the fruits either.  Some transplant hospitals do say that but I'm 2-1/2 years out and still doing well!

  • I actually use warm water and a little dish soap for salad veggies, and then rinse with cold water before using the salad spinner. Its what my husband’s doctor recommended.
  • My transplant team told me not to eat anything raw, so I always have my fruits blanched with hot water. I only eat thoroughly cooked vegetables.I know the taste was ruined, but just to be on the safe side.

  • My transplant center recommends rinsing all fruits and vegetables with a mix of 50/50 vinegar and water.
  • At my transplant hospital, we were required to take 8 classes on nutrition, etc.  The lady Doc said to just wash them with water.  That's it.

    • Wow 8 classes.  What did they cover?

      • As I recall, 4 nutrition classes and 4 others on various topics on general post-TX advice and guidelines.  Such as using which type and when for sun screen, pets you should not have, getting check-ups on a regular basis, dental health and taking Amoxicillin before teeth cleaning, how to avoid infections and mosquitoes, and such as that.

They were only 45 minutes each and had a 8 to 10 page handouit with each.  Easy stuff and basic with lots of conversation.  .
