Normal fluctuations in creatinine?

You know your creatinine won't be the exact same every time you get it checked so what is a normal fluctuation in creatinine from one test to another? This is based on the normal range of .6 to 1.3.So is a normal fluctuation .1? .2? .3? More? Thanks!

  • Please define "Normal." The important issue with creatinine is whether the level is steadily rising over a few test results or not.

We, in the US, are coming into summer, bringing higher risk of dehydration. this is the most common cause of fluctuation in creatinine levels. When thinking of hydration, imagine this image, a drop of "creatinine" in a pail of water and the same drop in a glass of water....which do you think will have a higher CR level? Maintaining adequate hydration, especially before blood work, is key to retrieving accurate readings for all levels, affecting medication doses (like Prograf and insulin.)

In my history, concern from the team began when the level rises above .3 (US scale) , however I have experienced this and was instructed to up my intake and repeat the blood work in a week.

Other issues affecting CR levels are medications, illness or infection, rejection, Sodium intake and diet, and much more. Defining "normal" would consider all factors to determine what is normal for you.

    • I just got a variation of .2 from an Urgent Care clinic which is NOT my normal lab.

I'm usually 1.3 but I got a 1.5 yet my potassium and BUN were virtually the same and my urinalysis was PERFECT so I'm sure this is normal fluctuation along with a different lab doing the tests.
      • Results vary from lab to to have it checked again. You (and the team) are looking for a trend, not an instant read of kidney function.
