Supplements for osteoarthritis

I am 3yrs post liver TX.  I take prograf and myfortic.  Until 1 month ago  was also taking prednisone.

I have recently started having real pain in both thumbs.  Doc says it is osteoarthritis.  Couple questions.

1. Pred may have been working to keep down the inflamation and pain.  Any ever had arthritis flair up when they got off of pred?

2. I'd like to be able to take some of supplements that are supposed to help the arthritis.  Such as glucosamine amoung others.  My TX team says no.  Anybody on my same meds taking an anti-arthritis supplement?

I'm hurting.  Going to do something, just not sure what.  Any help appreciated.

  • i'm on a regimen (doctor-approved) of omega 3 and turmeric, plus still on 2.5mg daily of prednisone. turmeric is a powerful anti-inflammatory. both can help but check with your docs.
  • If you do decide to buy the magnesisum oil I would not spray it near your liver or spray on any cuts because the magnesium oil has naturally occuring salts.

    • Just in theory since magnesium has detoxing abilities maybe it could pull out magnesium from your liver???

Progar Depletes magnesium but we need magnesium to live!!!

  • Onions are so amazing

I have been eating onions for a few weeks on a daily basis and I feel it is the cure for my psuedomonas to keep it in perfect balance.

It is high in quercetin and I did read that quercetin could deplete prograf but what I do is eat onions hours after taking prograf

Duke has on onions on their go to list for healthy foods.

    • I eat my share of onions!

      • Awesome!  Did you see the link to the page of foods to avoid?

Like Gluten and Wheat??? too much fruit

  • Supplement like magnesium might help and hopefully will but you know dear Steve that diet is more powerful.

Here is link that might be helpful. Not all suggestions on this website would be safe for us but take a look at the diet

  • OK.  So I got over to the pharmacy and picked up some magnesium.  Not your brand and not spray oil as they did not have any.  I'll give it a week and see how much it helps.  If I see any improvement I'll get the spray oil.

Thanks so much for your help!

    • You are welcome! Pharmacy grade supplements are great!

    • Can I ask then, what form of magnesium do you take?
