Teeths Deep Clearning - Antibiotic Drug

All,

I am going to tooth deep cleaning as required for my gums. My Nephrologist and Periodontist have told me take amoxicilline 500 mg 4 tablets 1 hour before of treatment. That means my total single time dose will be 2000 MG.  The reason they said is,  Antibiotic will prevent the kidney and other orgrans from bacteria.

have/had you faced similar situations and what were the antibiotics taken ?

Thanks,

  • I was also prescribed 2000 mg but its doesn't suit me so i reduce the dosage and it works

  • I was told, pre transplant, to take antibiotic but afterwards, my physician said, no worries so never have.
  • It used to be standard protocol for all transplant patients to take antibiotics before going to the dentist. But protocols are changing. I know that my kidney/pancreas transplant coordinator has told me that they now follow what some of the more advanced heart tx centers are doing. And that is not bothering with the antibiotics. So my first few years of transplant I took the 2 grams and was pretty sick afterwards (thereby dehydrating my kidney) and now (thank goodness) I can simply get my teeth cleaned and then move on with my day.

It really depends on your center and your dentist.

  • Hi - I finished a deep clean last December. I tell you I didn't take the required dose. I took one 500 mg an hour before and one 500mg at bed time. Did this for two days. The antibiotics were amoxicillin. Never had a problem. I think 2000mg as was suggested for me to take was crazy and besides it would have made me sick..
    • I had no idea 2000 mg of Amoxicillin upsets some folks.  I think (and have ample evidence and anecdotal experience) that my gut is made of inudstrical grade stainless steel.

  • I've read that poor dental hygene is a contributor to heart inflamation and attack.  Guess the germs get into the blood stream if you have very nasty teeth.   So, why not take an antibiotic with teeth cleaning just to be on the safe side?

    • I agree but feel 2000 is excessive in one go. When I go for general clean I take 500mg amoxicillin an hour before. i just feel safer taking something.
  • Hi I had my kidney transplant at Mayo Minnesota in December 2016, my doctors said antibiotics should not be necessary when you visit the dentist.  its to the dentist and your discretion.

  • They are correct! I take 2000mg of Amoxicillin every time I go to the dentist, and if I forget they remember for me giving it to me before doing the procedure.
  • Hello. I used to do that but I was told they stopped it now. I have my teeth cleaned every three months was advised to by my renal Doctor.
