Share - which illness led up to you needing a transplant?

I received a liver transplant at Stanford in august . It was acute liver failure due to taking over the counter herbal detox cleanse in march of 2016. I fell ill with in a week of completing this herbal cleanse. Vey sick in the abdominal area, itchy skin, and I was very tired and listless. Than several days later I woke up with yellow eyes, next day my body was swollen with water. I just had my liver tested several months earlier and my liver enzyme count was normal. I was rushed to the hospital to discover my liver count went from 29 to 1063 in a week.

How many years have you had your Transplant for?

3 mos.

I am Interested in Transplant Friends because...

I am having issues with hair loss. My results from lab work show my liver new liver is normal which I am so very grateful for as I only would have lasted one more week maybe. I am healing well although my kidneys took a toll with the dying liver in me from april 1 through aug.9. I was just curious about the hair loss as trivial as that may sound after having gotten a new gift of life. It is also relieving to hear other people's stories and similar issues.

Which Transplant Center has or will perform your life saving surgery?

  • G'day Janice, just so you know that I am not deceiving you, I have chronic liver disease brought about by youthful stupidity. Re my:discussion on moral issues . So there exists a whole lot of extra issues for me. Questions of deserving or not seem to be at the forefront. Would understand completely if you didn't want to messages me and sometimes feel deserving of this. Sorry, no sleep again,4.30am here so if this email goes all over the place it's just reflecting my thoughts. Now have osteoporosis. Told Fri. Karma!

  • Yes Wayne. Being positive about wanting to live is what got me through my ordeal. As I mentioned. Acute liver failure is very dangerous in comparison to chronic. All the organs start shutting down quickly ...the liver is irratic while failing dobthe mind is affected. That is why I had to have someone with me 24/7 . Others with the chronic failure aren't at such a risk ... but ultimately it was my positive spirit and athletic body that floated me to shore. So yes positive works. Take care my friend may God be with you.
  • Thanks for the request and the information. There are people around so if things go pear shaped they can call someone. I have post TX worked out but still not officially on list. Am trying a new concept for me, I am really really trying to be positive. Hope all is ok with yourself. Thanks again.

  • This comment is for Wayne L. From Australia.... I don't know too much about chronic liver failure as I had acute liver failure. My doctors would not have me live alone. My daughter saved my life at least 3 times as I would have passed out without anyone knowing.i would just faint. I do belong to a liver group where chronics are primary who say the same thing. We do have the same meld score here as well and mine would fluctuate from17 to 33 over night. Than took off to 36-39 when I gad my transplant. My liver also was dead although only discovered when taken out.
  • Hi Janice, Meld in Australia is measured 15 to 40. 40 being gravely ill. At Christmas my score was 33 and now down to 17/ 18. Yes there are people here but I feel I have to take this journey by myself. Not sure if others in my life quite understand how sick I feel sometimes. I have it better than a lot of people so I should stop whining. Doc says liver is not functioning, and have yet to be officially put on the list. Doing all the building up but still don't know. A little scared.

  • Hi Janice,

I send a friend request to you. I tried to send you my testimony but I think you first need to accept my request.

  • Your story is very interesting and love to hear more, well thank God you have your energy and plenty of good support.
  • Hi Willie, yes I would be interested in hearing your detailed story. It is similar to mine. I did have my liver tested along with the usual full yearly examination and my liver was fine just two months (dec. 2015) before the acute liver failure.. than in the middle of march I too started getting a super flu , or at least I assumed) than two days later I woke up with pencil yellow eyes. I can send you a detail story too if you like. My new liver is excellent , my energy is amazing . I'm back into athletic training and oil painting. But my kidneys are erratic. Some days they function at 65% other days at 50 %. , it's crap shoot.
  • Hi Janice, Thanks for your reply. I enjoyed good health till Feb 2015 when I became sick. Only then they discoved it was my liver. I thought that they made a mistake but after a week I became yellow and then became more sick. They questioned me many times and by different persons but they were unable to find the cause. I feel much younger and feel also more energetic after the transplant. It was very difficult for me as I was a total of 71 day in hospital, 9 day in a coma, etc. to much to tell you all the information but if you are interested I can send you my testimony with much more detail. I had several setback after the TX but that seems to be under control now. My medication was not adjusted since July and my blood test result are going down. The doctors are very happy with my progress. Let stay in touch. I am not that young......i am 63 years old. Thanks for your comment.

  • Hi Willie,

Wow I just read your story, did you take anything to possibly caused failure? And your young also. You give me a lot of inspiration. I bet your wife is besides herself with happiness . That was a clever idea of your hospital to put you in a coma . I was so close to death but they didn't realize just how close until they took the liver out and noticed it had shrunk down to 1/3 it's normal size with a huge scar running right across it. They thought my liver would heal because my meld score was erratic from 17 to 34 than back down to 17 up to 35 . I am very happy for you.
